The World Rail Network provides information on all existing and under construction fixed-guideway transit routes for more than 350 transit systems, from 270 cities and 70+ countries. Geospatial data is now available to purchase and download in CSV, GeoJson, and Shapefile formats.

What's Included
Data Attributes
Stations and lines
o Approximately 23,000+ existing stations and roughly 2,500+ under-construction stations
o 1100+ existing lines and 100+ under-construction lines
Mode
o Including heavy rail, commuter rail, medium-capacity systems, light rail, automated guideway transit, and monorail.
Year opened
o Available for 95% of existing stations.
o Available for 95% of existing lines.
Projected Opening
o Available for 98% of under-construction stations.
o Available for 99% of under-construction lines.
Operator
o Available for 100% of existing lines.
Location:
City, State, Metro Area, and Country
Symbology:
The data also comes with a predefined symbology scheme that was developed by the most recent metro maps (as of January 1st, 2021).
(Note, the dashboards simplify the line symbology to a singular color.)
Data Format
Data are provided in Shapefile, GeoJSON, and CSV formats, and can be opened using ArcGIS, QGIS, R, and other geospatial analysis applications (the CSV files can be opened using Excel or similar applications). Additional information, including rules related to data use, is provided in a read me/data dictionary file attached to the data.
Data Reliability
The data is derived from a variety of sources. Not all sources agree on specific attributes. Information was prioritized from websites established for each individual transit system. Please contact us with corrections at contactus@worldrailnetwork.com.
